Do you enjoy fantasy movies or role-playing games (either pen & paper or on your PC)? Great! You can now take your passion for the genre to a whole new level—with fantasy LARP. In fantasy LARP, you are not limited to your imagination or on-screen graphics: instead, you can bring your character to life for real—through clothing, facial expressions, gestures, and by using your entire body.
Usually, a group of like-minded people, dressed in their fantasy costumes and often equipped with LARP weapons, gather at suitable locations, such as forests—or even castles—that they have exclusively leased for the event.
Of course, as opposed to P&Ps or MMORPGs, in LARPing you’ll have to consider certain physical limitations that prevent the depiction of a life-like dragon or actual magical effects. But interpersonal role-playing especially benefits from the real and immediate atmosphere generated at a fantasy LARP. Sitting at an actual campfire and listening to the howling of the monsters in the woods is quite different than sitting at the kitchen table merely imagining it.
How can I participate in a fantasy LARP event? And how do I get there?
Usually, fantasy LARPs are organized by non-profit associations, youth groups, or other individuals, and they are often announced publicly on the internet. You can find them on social media or by using search keywords such as “LARP calendar,” “LARP gate,” or “con organizer”. Events take place year-round and all over the world, so it is very likely that you will find one in your area as well.
In order to attend, you’ll need to fill out a registration form provided by the organizers (usually on their website). You’ll also have to pay an attendance fee, the amount of which varies depending on the nature of the event, so you can always find one that meets your expectations. The number of participants is usually strictly limited, so make sure to register as soon as possible.
Newcomers, students, or people who don’t own a car will rarely have any trouble finding a ride to the location—the LARP community is considered quite accommodating, so feel free to ask the organizers or other the participants for assistance.
What do I need to attend a fantasy LARP?
That depends on the type of event. The website or social media page of the organizers will usually give you an initial idea. Furthermore, most organizers will be happy to assist you with assembling your first equipment.
Because the ambience and atmosphere of any event are determined primarily by the clothing of the participants, it is quite important to pay some extra attention to your fantasy costume (usually called garments). Once the character is created, equipped with suitable fantasy clothing, and registered for an event, you can embark on your fantastic journey!
