During the 1300s, the iconic conical helmet shape favored by Norman warriors was replaced with cylindrical great helms. Enter: The Sugarloaf helm; whose domed shape was designed not just for aesthetic appeal but also to deflect projectiles or blows from an enemy. This variation on the Great Helm became popular during and beyond medieval times thanks largely due to its resilience & strength under duress. This variation earned its name from resembling pre-packaged loaves of sugar popularly used at this time.
