Warriors of old would often don a layer of protection to guard against heavy blows in battle. This thick garment, known as a gambeson, provided padding for both an extra barrier and comfort for its wearer when paired with chainmail - fending off potential injury from damaged rings or even broken bones by blunt force alone. Not only does it serve this purpose today on fields during combat training; but more simply creates perfect reenactment clothing due to its five leather strings fastening which promote mobility while still being 10mm (8mm compressed) thick throughout.
