DIY: Craft Your Own LARP Weapons

Medieval shields are a must-have for any LARP event. Want to create a custom shield? You’ve come to the right place! In our shop, you’ll find everything you need: shield blanks, liquid latex, and silicone spray. With these, you can craft a knight’s shield exactly to your specifications.

Foam is used in LARP, mock combat, and reenactments primarily to make safe, lightweight weapons and shields. It serves as the core material, coated with liquid latex to create authentic armor. Foam padding provides extra protection and comfort under armor pieces, and it also adds volume and shape to costumes. Its flexibility and shock absorption make it essential for safe gear.

Fiberglass Weapon Core Rods
Our fiberglass weapon core rods come in three different strengths/diameters, offering the perfect balance between stability and flexibility. Ideal for crafting swords, spears, and axes. These are the three main features of our fiberglass:

  • Durability: Fiberglass is extremely resistant and retains its shape and stability even with intense use.
  • Flexibility: The slight flexibility ensures that your weapons can be used realistically and safely in combat.
  • Versatility: Suitable for all types of weapons, our rods provide the foundation needed to bring your creative ideas to life.

You’ll also find:

  • Foam Clay: A versatile material that is easy to shape and work with. Ideal for detailed armor and decoration designs.
  • Foam Mats: Perfect as a base for weapons and shields, easy to cut and shape. They offer a stable yet flexible foundation.
  • Liquid Latex: Essential for crafting and repairing LARP weapons. It gives your creations a realistic texture and protects them from wear and tear.
  • DIY Shields/Shield Blanks: Start your next project with our shield blanks. They are the perfect base for creating custom and impressive shields.

How to Create Your Own LARP Shield

Want to craft your own custom LARP shield? With the right materials from our online shop, it’s easy. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

Materials You’ll Need:

    • Shield blank
    • Foam clay
    • Fiberglass weapon core rod
    • Liquid latex
    • Silicone spray
    1. Prepare the Shield Blank
The first step is to choose the right shield blank, which forms the base of the LARP shield. Choose the size and shape that fits your character or role.

    2. Insert the Weapon Core Rod
To add stability to your shield, insert a fiberglass weapon core rod into the center of the blank. Cut the rod to the appropriate length and secure it with strong glue or foam clay.

    3. Shape the Foam Clay
Foam clay is often used to create detailed and textured parts of shields. Since it’s light and flexible, it can be applied well on foam bases or directly onto the shield. This allows you to reinforce edges and add decorations. Let it dry thoroughly.

    4. Apply Liquid Latex
The next step is choosing the color of your liquid latex. Once the foam clay is dry, apply several layers of the chosen latex over the entire shield. Apply each layer evenly and allow it to dry completely before applying the next.

    5. Seal and Protect with Silicone Spray
To protect the latex and make the surface smooth, durable, and water-resistant, use silicone spray. Lightly spray the shield to make it more resistant to wear and moisture, so you can even use it in the rain without worry.

Now paint and decorate your shield to your liking.
Your LARP shield is now ready for action!
