Description

The Viborg Shirt primarily serves as an undershirt, which protects outerwear from sweat. Its design makes use of long sleeves and a closable neck collar, which prevents additional dirt on the wrists and neck. Before textiles could be cheaply reproduced by machine, clothing was handled with care. Underwear was essential to protect the more expensive outerwear from sweat and thus intense pollution. The Viborg Shirt is equipped with long sleeves and a closable neck closure, thus additionally minimizing the soiling of the outerwear at the neck and wrist. Finds from the period during the first half of the 11th century often show shirts made of dozens of patches; the Viborg shirt, on the other hand, is well preserved and had only one patch on the elbow of the left side. The optical decoration of ornamental seams on the chest offers the wearer the possibility to wear the shirt without outerwear.

My first order with this seller and a great experience! I bought the small men's and am a woman with 35” bust and 42” hip. The fit is generous and will probably shrink slightly with washing which is fine. The fabric is reasonably soft and I think will soften more with wear. The cut of this shirt is outstanding with a really nice fit. You cannot tell from the simple front only photo the seller has up but it's double sided with beautiful detail. My only issue is the inside seam on the front placket has surged seams that show if you wear the yoke open. I can get around this by removing it by hand and doing a hand stitch, maybe in a color, so it peeks out. A truly great item for anyone but especially for reenactors wanting that core garment item for their Viking ensemble! Highly highly recommend (and dynamite fast ship too btw).
